This November, Leonard Elschenbroich takes the helm as conductor at Amsterdam’s prestigious Cello Biënnale, leading two performances at the city’s Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. Featuring previous winners of the National Cello Competition, Stefano Bruno, Hayoung Choi, and Harriet Krijgh, the first concert includes Strauss’ Romanze for cello and orchestra, Widmann’s 5 Albumblätter and Elgar’s Cello Concerto, and opens with Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde Vorspiel, all performed by the symphony orchestra of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under Leonard’s baton. He then returns to the stage towards the end of the Biënnale, conducting the CvA symphony orchestra at the final round of the National Cello Competition, where the three chosen finalists perform Tchaikovsky’s ‘Rococo Variations’, following which the winner will be decided.
