Julian Bliss features on Chandos and Juliana Koch’s new Album “Ruth Gipps: Piper of Dreams”
Chandos has released a captivating new album with oboist Juliana Koch ‘Ruth Gipps: Piper of Dreams’ which features pianist Michael McHale, and clarinettist Julian Bliss. The album showcases chamber works for oboe (and cor anglais) composed by Ruth Gipps between 1938 and 1990, spanning her entire compositional career, including a standout performance of her Trio for Oboe and Clarinet.
Critics have praised the musicianship displayed on the album, with Gramophone noting the “wonderfully mellifluous display” from the trio, where “the sense of teamwork is palpable.” The Yorkshire Times’ Andrew Palmer specifically appreciated the “tonal shift” Bliss brought to the ensemble, emphasizing how “the three outstanding musicians communicate well with each other,” particularly in the “beautiful and sincere adagio.”
