Grant Llewellyn conducts UK Premiere
Renowned conductor Grant Llewellyn will lead the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) in the UK premiere of Sarah Lianne Lewis’s “L’Île des jamais trop tard” on Sunday at the BBC Hoddinott Hall. This highly anticipated event follows the world premiere, which was also conducted by Llewellyn with the Orchestre National de Bretagne (ONB) in Rennes last year. Further Information
“L’Île des jamais trop tard,” which translates to “The Island of Never Too Late,” is a symphonic tale crafted by composer Sarah Lianne Lewis and playwright Stéphane Michaka. The piece tells the story of a ten-year-old North Atlantic islander, Lise, alongside polar animals stranded by melting sea ice, against the backdrop of the looming climate threat. It explores and reflects upon the sounds of seascapes and the environmental challenges they face.
The world premiere in Rennes featured Artist in Residence Vanessa Wagner and actress Céline Milliat-Baumgartner, who brought the narrative to life under Llewellyn’s baton at the Théatre National de Bretagne. This collaboration received widespread acclaim for its innovative fusion of music and storytelling, addressing urgent environmental themes through a rich, emotive soundscape.
