James Brown Management is delighted to announce the extension of Alpesh Chauhan’s contract as Principal Guest Conductor of Düsseldorfer Symphoniker for a further three seasons to 2027. Chauhan made his auspicious debut with the orchestra in 2018 with Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4: “what Alpesh Chauhan … unleashed on the podium of the Tonhalle … is anything but average.” (Westdeutsche Zeitung). He has since enjoyed a special relationship with the orchestra appearing with them in a wide variety of repertoire. Chauhan has brought his own enthusiasm for new music to the orchestra with George Hamilton’s Upcycle and in 2021 the premiere of John Psathas’ percussion concerto Leviathan.

Commenting on the news, Chauhan says “I am thrilled to continue my relationship with Düsseldorfer Symphoniker as Principal Guest Conductor in the years to come! We have already shared some wonderful experiences together, performing symphonic heavyweights as well as lesser-known masterworks – with some fabulous soloist collaborations too. I love the commitment, dedication and vitality that the fantastic musicians in Düsseldorf bring – always ready to explore and rediscover a wide range of repertoire – also alongside our esteemed colleague and Principal Conductor, Adam Fischer.

We feel so supported by the enthusiasm of our loyal audience: I take great pride in seeing how this is developing and broadening in diverse communities. It’s also inspiring bringing new commissions to life – also within our ’Green Monday’ series – themed around the important subject of climate change, as well as symphonic favourites – recently with Shostakovich, Bruckner, Schumann and Rachmaninoff.

I look forward to more years of great music-making together!”

This weekend, Chauhan conducts the orchestra in another new work, Kristjan Järvi’s Green Piece No. 9 On the Theme Power Generation. This alongside Walton’s breath-taking symphonic mass, Symphony No. 1 and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 with one of the most significant champions of the piano scene, Stephen Hough, marking this exciting ongoing partnership.

Other forthcoming highlights in Chauhan’s current season include his debut with West Australian Symphony Orchestra in two contrasting programmes, a return to Düsseldorf with Prokofiev and Schumann, and Keith Warner’s production of Michael Tippett’s New Year with Birmingham Opera Company.
